Vanhan kirjallisuuden päivät 2014

Howdy.

Here we are in Sastamala.. formely known as Vammala. The stage and the PA has been set up. Wireless microphones have been tested. Batteries have been exchanged. Everything should be ready for Vanhan kirjallisuuden päivät (www.vanhankirjallisuudenpaivat.com). 1200 seats ready to be filled. Good stuff!

Kids, sounds and scale models

Some pictures from an audio workshop that I did with 4H-Organization in Valkeakoski. We made soundscapes with children for their scale models. They had built beautiful miniature nature environments. We made and recorded sounds together for the elements in the scale model. There were snakes, rivers, dogs, humans... and rain and thunder of course. Some wolves as well!  Needless to say that doing wolf sounds was the number one thing. Imitating a pack of wolves generates a lot of decibels!

The scale models and soundscapes were on display in Valkeakoski library.

Thesis!

Hi. Just graduating from Tampere University of Applied Sciences! Good stuff.
Here's a link to my thesis (in Finnish only):
http://www.theseus.fi/handle/10024/77623

English abstract:
"Bachelor’s thesis studies how to record a band live in a studio so that every instrument is recorded simultaneously. What should be taken into account? Recording a band live is challenging and it takes a lot of effort from both the band and the recording engineer. The thesis examines the benefits and disadvantages of recording everything live. The study is done from a musician’s and recording engineer’s perspective. Music recording books, magazines and interviews are used as source material. The thesis also studies the history of recording and the reasons why many of today’s recording sessions are done one track at a time.

When recording live the spadework and the recording process itself are laborious. A right kind of space is required when recording a band live. The decisions about the final musical elements are done while recording when recording live."

Interesting, aye? :)

Dance Theatre MD: Triumfi trailer and documentation DVD

I was hired to do a dvd documentation and a trailer for a contemporary dance piece called Triumfi. Triumfi is a choreography by Ari Numminen. The music was composed by Jouni Kaipainen. Triumfi premiered at Hällä-stage on 21st of November 2013. It was produced by Dance Theatre MD. And, voilà, here is the trailer:

Working with Dance Theatre MD was a pleasure (again). The MD technicians helped me out with hooking the sound straight from the soundboard and provided cables, stands and such. Nice people. The documentation was done with three cameras of which two were operated and one was fixed. This setup worked really well last time when I did the documentation of Skywalker in 2012.

Go see the show! There are few shows in March 2014: http://www.tanssiteatterimd.fi/
